How to measure for square footage   Round up each dimension of the room or any area to the nearest foot. For example if one dimension is 11' 9" measure is as 12' Multiply length by width of every area to determine Square Feet and ADD 10% for waste factor Divide Square Feet by 9 to determine Square Yards Example: Room 12' x 10'= 120 sq. ft.                Closet   6' x  5'  =    30 sq. ft.                                             150 sq. ft Add 10%                                15 sq. ft.                                              165 sq. ft. Needed 165 sq. ft. ÷ 9 = 18.33 sq. yd.

Important Note:

For berber carpets the waste factor must be calculated based on the width of the carpet and the area it is installed in, since cross seams should be avoided as much as possible for berber carpet installation.

Also, for patterned carpets, the waste factor must be calculated based on the height and width of the pattern repeat size and the area that it is installed in to make sure the patterns of multiple pieces of the carpet will match precisely. The pattern repeat size is usually printed on the back of each sample.

Therefore, the waste factor for berber and patterned carpets are usually more than regular plush or freeze carpets.
